What is Forum Theatre Philly?
Forum Theatre Philly is a 9-week theatre workshop series dedicated to exploring the power of performance as a tool for addressing gun violence in our communities. This innovative program brings together adults who have been impacted by incarceration to devise a theatre piece that challenges audiences to consider alternative responses to violence.
Who Can Participate?
The workshop series is open to adults who have been impacted by incarceration to any degree—whether directly or through the experiences of loved ones. Forum Theatre Philly is designed to empower participants to tell our own stories, reflect on our journeys, and collaborate with community to create new paths forward.
How Does It Work?
Through a combination of theatre history, storytelling, and collaborative creation, participants will explore real news stories related to gun violence. Using a range of theatre techniques—including tableaux, soundscapes, and scene work—participants will transform these stories into a powerful devised theatre piece that amplifies their voices and sheds light on pressing social issues.
By participating, you will:
Engage in meaningful conversations around gun violence
Learn theatre techniques to express your story
Collaborate in a supportive environment
Develop a creative work to be shared with an audience of peers
The program culminates in a final performance, with a chance to invite loved ones to witness the powerful stories participants have created. A talkback session follows, allowing for further reflection on the themes explored.
When and where?
The workshops will be held every Friday for two hours, starting October 18th. Sessions will take place at the Institute for Community Justice (ICJ) Common Room. Final performance: Dec. 20th.
